 Alabama High School Graduation Exam 

The Alabama High School Graduation Exam is a multiple choice exam that is written on the eleventh grade level that requires students to demonstrate proficiency in areas of course work that include logic, problem solving and thinking skills. The exam consists of five subject area tests that require students to respond to questions in reading, language, mathematics, biology and social studies.  

Reading  

The reading section requires students to read and comprehend multiple sources of reading documents including articles, poems, manuals. various editorials and reference mateials.

Language

The language section tests the students' understanding of grammar and usage, sentence structure, correct capitalization and punctuation, appropriate word choice, and appropriate organizational skills for writing and document revision.

Mathematics

The mathematics subject-area test requires students to perform basic operations on algebraic expressions, to solve equations and inequalities, to apply concepts related to functions, to use formulas to apply graphing techniques, to represent problem situations, and to solve problems involving a variety of algebraic and geometric concepts.

Approximately 75% of the mathematics exam consists of algebra and geometry represents the remander 25% of the exam. 

Biology

The biology section of the exam is specifically correlated to the Alabama Course of Study and is composed of ninety questions that test the understanding of 16 biology standards.

Social Studies

The social studies subtest requires students to demontrate knowledge of US History through

World War II. Students must demonstrate knowledge of the:

  • Global influence of the pre-colonial and colonial eras of the Western Hemisphere
  • Formation and development of the United States
  • Eras of revolution, expansion, and reform prior to the United States Civil War
  • United States Civil War era
  • Developments of the late 19th to the early 20th centuries
  • Causes and effects of World War I
  • Great Depression and World War II.

The Alabama High School Graduation Exam is administered during a one-week period. Students will partake in one subject area test per day.  Each test will be adminstered under untimed considerations; however, each testing period will last approximately three hours. 

The Alabama High School Graduation Exam will be administered during July 2013. Subtest dates will be provided soon.
